Elevation: 1,640m → 2,850m Distance: 11 km Duration: 5–7 hours Terrain: Rainforest Your journey begins with a drive from Moshi to Machame Gate. After registration, the adventure starts through dense rainforest, following a scenic trail up to Machame Camp. Expect lush vegetation, humidity, and your first real taste of Kilimanjaro.
Elevation: 2,850m → 3,810m Distance: 5 km Duration: 4–6 hours Terrain: Moorland You leave the rainforest behind and enter open moorland. The trail becomes steeper and more rugged as you ascend to the Shira Plateau, offering your first clear views of Kibo Peak.
Elevation: 3,810m → 4,630m → 3,960m Distance: 10 km Duration: 6–8 hours Terrain: Alpine Desert A key acclimatization day. You climb up to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy is critical for altitude adaptation. The landscape becomes dramatic, with volcanic formations and giant senecio plants.
Elevation: 3,960m → 4,035m Distance: 5 km Duration: 4–5 hours Terrain: Alpine Desert Start with the iconic Barranco Wall climb — steep but non-technical. After reaching the top, traverse ridges and valleys before descending into Karanga Valley and climbing again to camp.
Elevation: 4,035m → 4,673m Distance: 4 km Duration: 4–5 hours Terrain: Alpine Desert A shorter but important day. You ascend to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit push. Rest, hydrate, and prepare mentally and physically for the most challenging part of the expedition.
Elevation: 4,673m → 5,895m → 3,100m Distance: 17 km Duration: 10–14 hours Terrain: Arctic → Rainforest Summit day begins around midnight. You climb in darkness under extreme cold and altitude conditions. Reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa — is a moment of pure achievement. After the summit, descend back to Barafu for rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for recovery.
Elevation: 3,100m → 1,640m Distance: 10 km Duration: 3–4 hours Terrain: Rainforest Final descent through lush forest to Mweka Gate. Celebrate your achievement and receive your summit certificate before returning to Moshi.
